SPC (Ret.) Hunter LeVine was hit by an explosively formed penetrator (EFP) while driving a Humvee in Iraq. Though the blast blinded him, LeVine used his quick thinking and the help of a radio operator to drive to a medical unit. He endured countless surgeries in Iraq, and later in Germany. His first reconstructive surgery stateside lasted 23 hours.

The explosion took both of LeVine's eyes, several teeth, and left him with extensive scarring on his face and nose. He also contends with a traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress. 

LeVine has recieved many military decorations for his service, including the Army Commendation Medal and the Purple Heart.  

Update:  Hunter LeVine passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, June 12, 2013. Helping a Hero celebrates his life and will always remember him fondly.
