Cpl Ivan Sears, USMC
Cpl Ivan Sears was born in 29 Palms, CA and graduated from high school in San Antonio, TX. Hailing from a military family, he was active in the JROTC program and knew he wanted to defend his country.
During his deployment in 2010, Sears was first injured with shrapnel to his leg and forearm. He returned to his unit for the final portion of a three-day patrol. While in a compound, Ivan stepped on a pressure plate improvised explosive device. The blast tossed him into the air, severed his legs, and broke his hips. Sears' men dragged him out of the hole left by the explosion, and later found his rifle on the roof.
Sears was transported back to the United States for medical care and rehabilitation. In addition to two amputated legs and broken hips, he suffers from hearing loss in both ears and injuries to his hands. However, Ivan is a fighter and has not only learned to walk and drive, but also how to scuba dive, mono ski, sky dive, and play paint ball.
Ivan would like to go back to school and get a degree in education. Helping a Hero will build his home once he retires from The Marines.
